About the Diabetes in Pregnancy SIG
The NZSSD Diabetes in Pregnancy (DiP) Special Interest Group brings together nurses, midwives, dietitians, physicians, obstetricians, researchers, and other health professionals from across Aotearoa New Zealand who share a commitment to improving outcomes for people and whānau affected by diabetes in pregnancy. The SIG provides a national forum for collaboration, professional networking, workforce development, research dissemination, and the sharing of clinical knowledge, protocols, processes, and evidence-informed practice.
The group supports the advancement of high-quality diabetes in pregnancy care across Aotearoa through professional education, knowledge exchange, and engagement in national conversations that influence clinical practice and service delivery. Opportunities for connection and learning are provided through webinars, online hui, NZSSD study days, and conference activities.
Equity and Whānau-Centred Care
The Diabetes in Pregnancy SIG recognises the ongoing inequities experienced by Māori and other priority populations across the continuum of diabetes in pregnancy care, including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term health outcomes. Diabetes in pregnancy care extends beyond the management of glycaemia and encompasses the well-being whānau hapū, and communities.
The SIG is committed to advancing equitable, culturally safe, and whānau-centred approaches that acknowledge the importance of whakapapa, identity, whānau, community, and connection to place. Through collaboration, advocacy, workforce development, and the sharing of evidence-informed practice, the group seeks to contribute to improved maternal, infant, and whānau outcomes for current and future generations.
These values are reflected in the Diabetes in Pregnancy SIG logo, created by Jess Hinerangi Thompson-Carr (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine, Pākehā). The artwork depicts the connection between hapū whānau hapū and the natural world, illustrating how whānau hapū carry entire worlds within them. Water flows throughout the image as a symbol of life, nurturing, and connection, while references to Papatūānuku and Hine Moana acknowledge the intrinsic relationship between hauora and te taiao. The centring of Aotearoa within the artwork reinforces the importance of whenua, belonging, and identity. Together, these elements reflect a view of diabetes in pregnancy care that embraces whānau wellbeing, cultural identity, equity, and the health of future generations.

The SIG supports the dissemination and discussion of emerging research, quality improvement initiatives, models of care, and evidence-informed practice relevant to diabetes in pregnancy. Members are encouraged to contribute to research translation, share innovations from their local services, and promote equitable outcomes for whānau across Aotearoa.

This logo shows connection between hapū wāhine (pregnant women) and with the earth to show how wāhine carry entire worlds within us. The figure represents that connection to the divine, the giver of life. Illustrating a clear flow and nurturing feeling, with water playing a strong part in the hair and belly, as water is life and the giver of life, so are we.
Showing Aotearoa in a way we don't usually see it as well, toward the 'top' of the world instead of the 'bottom', to have it centred, as our whenua is our world, we love it dearly, we hold it close.
I drew this image with our atua wāhine in mind (Papatūānuku and Hine Moana), and to reflect upon how our hauora (health) is so intrinsically connected to te taiao, to the health of the earth.
