Registered Nurse Prescribing development grants are a limited source of money set aside to provide financial support to Registered Nurses who wish to undertake additional training to become Registered Nurse Prescribers in Specialist and Primary Care Teams and Registered Nurses who wish to undertake additional training to pursue a Nurse Practitioner pathway.
There is also a limited financial resource available to support Registered Nurse Prescribers and Nurse Practitioners to attend the Prescribing in Diabetes & Related Conditions meeting.

Two grants of $1,000 each are available per year to support a nurse undertaking a Registered Nurse Prescribing in Specialist and Primary Care Teams practicum
Two grants of $2,500 each are available per year to support a nurse undertaking a Nurse Practitioner practicum
Six grants of $500 each are available per year to support Registered Nurse Prescribers and Nurse Practitioners to attend the Prescribing in Diabetes & Related Conditions meeting held annually

Grant 2: Nurse Practitioner candidates, with a focus in diabetes care
Applications for Nurse Practitioner Practicum 2025
Financial contribution to supporting tertiary education fees for Nurse Practitioner Training Programme/Practicum year, costs associated with travel/accommodation for block courses or secondary placements, course associated textbooks, cost for clinical mentorship/supervision or professional supervision where full HWNZ/NPTP funding is not available, has been declined or there is a short fall in available funding to cover all costs
Priority will be given to Māori & Pacific health and rural areas.
Award value maximum $2,500.00
Application requirements & Criteria
Financial member of NZSSD
Minimum of 4 years’ experience in area of practice relevant to diabetes
Evidence of decline of HWNZ/NPTP funding or that funding allocated is insufficient to cover all costs
Evidence of acceptance into a space on an approved Nursing Council of NZ Nurse Practitioner approved programme (in an unfunded HWNZ/NPTP capacity) at a nominated University
Copy of written agreement from an authorized prescribing health professional (Nurse Practitioner or Medical Dr) to provide one to one clinical supervision
Copy of written support from employer indicating support for the student to enrol in the Nurse Practitioner training programme and be released for clinical supervision
Applicant is residing and working in NZ
Overview from applicant providing an insight of employment, demographic & role/function within current area of practice, particularly around diabetes care provided
Identify if funding is being sourced from other avenues/funding streams. If so, what source and to what value?
Grant reviews and decisions
Awards will be considered at the NZSSD executive meeting following each cut-off date. The executive meets the second week of each month.
Each applicant will be contacted via email by the NZSSD secretary shortly after the executive meeting with notification of the outcome of the application and to request account details for payment of the grant if successful.
Grant decisions made by the executive committee are final.
Registered Nurse Prescribing Development Grant 1 - 2025

Grant 1: Registered Nurses, with a focus in diabetes care, working toward Registered Nurse Prescribing in Specialist and Primary Care Teams authorisation.
Applications for Semester 1 2025
Financial contribution to support tertiary education fees for prescribing practicum, costs associated with travel/accommodation to block courses, course required textbooks or cost for prescribing mentors’ time in situations where the nurse has been unable to apply for, not successful in securing full HWNZ funding or there is a short fall in available funding.
Priority will be given to Māori & Pacific health and rural areas.
Award value maximum $1,000.00.

Evidence HWNZ funding declined/not available or allocated funding insufficient to cover all costs
Evidence applicant has enrolled & secured a place in a recognised NZ RN prescribing practicum paper
Identify if funding is being sourced from other avenues/funding streams If so, what source and to what value?
Applicant is residing and working in NZ
Overview from applicant providing an insight of employment, demographic & role/function within area of practice particularly around diabetes care provided
Applicant has been working in their intended area of prescribing for a minimum of three years full time equivalent as per Nurse Council of NZ requirements
